Rock And Roll Cleans Up Its Act!

20th June 2008

Music fans urged to pitch in with green thinking during this year's festival season...

The festival season is upon us and music lovers should expect a stunning summer line-up of rockin' acts. All over the nation, festival organisers are making the effort to make their events as ethical and eco-friendly as possible and it is now the individual's turn to do their bit.

Festivals such as Glastonbury have made a promising start by giving out free, biodegradable potato-starch tent pegs to campers. They've also ensured all food outlets use wooden instead of plastic cutlery and cups made of compostable material.

Although this is great, festivals use a lot of energy in creating the ultimate light and sound shows for the thousands of music devotees that attend every year, so it's important for both organisers and those attending to pitch in with a bit of green thinking.

Just think, if everyone due to attend Creamfields this year recycled just 1 drinks can they could save enough energy to power the stage for 14 hours. or 34 hours if they did the same at the O2 wireless festival.

Radio 1 DJ Reggie Yates comments "Festivals are doing everything they can do reduce their carbon footprint and it is now the individuals turn to do their bit. Recycling drinks cans is the easiest way to be green at festivals this summer. Not only is the drinks can 100% recyclable but it is also infinitely recyclable, meaning it can be recycled again and again. It's so easy to get involved in recycling and is important for us all to do our bit. So don't forget to pack your drinks cans for the journey and enjoy a couple of refreshing beers with your mates while setting up your tent. Just please remember to recycle them as just one recycled drinks cans can save enough energy to power a 60w light bulb for 2 hours - it makes a difference!"

So whichever festival you're heading to this year, think green!

  • LONDON: O2 Wireless Festival is expecting 20,000 people per day (100,000 people in total). So if everyone at the festival recycled a drinks can - it would save enough energy to power the stage for 34 hours
  • SOUTH WEST: Greenbelt Festival is expecting 18,500 people in total. So if everyone at the festival recycled a drinks can - it would save enough energy to power the stage for 6 hours
  • NORTH WEST: Creamfields is expecting 40,000 people in total. So if everyone at the festival recycled a drinks can - it would save enough energy to power the stage for 14 hours
  • WEST MIDLANDS: The Big Chill is expecting 30,000 people in total. So if everyone at the festival recycled a drinks can - it would save enough energy to power the stage for 10 hours
  • EAST: Latitude is expecting 25,000 people in total. So if every one at the festival recycled a drinks can - it would save enough energy to power the stage for just over 8 hours
  • WALES: The Green Man Festival is expecting 10,000 people in total. So if everyone at the festival recycled a drinks can - it would save enough energy to power the stage for 3 hours
  • ISLE OF WIGHT: Sunday Best Bestival is expecting 30,000 people in total. So if everyone at the festival recycled a drinks can - it would save enough energy to power the stage for 10 hours
