Recycle Your Christmas Cards!

The Woodland Trust has teamed up with Recycle Now, the national recycling campaign for England, for the third year running as part of its annual Christmas Card Recycling Scheme.

Collections in January 2006 smashed all previous records with a staggering 82 million Christmas cards – that’s a 41% increase on last year’s collection and enough cards to stretch from London to Iceland and back three times over! This year cards will be collected in Tesco, WHSmith and TK Maxx stores throughout the country.

TV soap star Debra Stephenson - Corrie's Frankie Baldwin - is supporting this year's Christmas Card Campaign. She says: "I am delighted to be part of Recycle Now and the Woodland Trust's successful and worthwhile campaign. I am a keen recycler myself and will be taking all of my Christmas cards this year to participating Tesco, WHSmith and TK Maxx stores. It's a great way for people to get their New Year off to a 'greener' start and get into the recycling habit."

Gareth Lloyd, from Recycle Now, says: “Christmas is traditionally a time when we all create too much waste – usually over three million tonnes. Recycling Christmas cards for the Woodland Trust is just one easy way to help reduce this and help a worthwhile cause at the same time.”

People will be able to take their cards to participating Tesco (excludes Express), mainland WHSmith high street stores and TK Maxx stores throughout January 2007. The cards are then taken to paper mills where they are recycled into brand new paper products. Money raised through the scheme helps the Woodland Trust to save existing, and create new, woodland.

Sue Holden, chief executive of the Woodland Trust, says: “The Trust thanks everyone who supports the campaign each year – it’s a marvellous effort. You’re helping us to plant thousands of new trees and protect the little ancient woodland we have left in the UK.”
