New Greener Guide to Living Launched

IN - Dishwashers - they can use three to four times less water and energy than washing up by hand, if you leave a tap running throughout to rinse.

OUT - Patio Heaters - they account for one million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

For those looking to make a difference but would like some pointers as to where to start, award-winning developer, Crest Nicholson, has launched The Guide to Greener Living, packed full of advice for living a more environmentally conscious way of life.

The guide offers helpful tips, ideas and useful contacts broken down in to six key areas; Around Your Home, Energy, Transport, Water, Waste and Wildlife. Stephen Stone, Chief Executive, Crest Nicholson Plc, comments: "Homes in the UK account for just under 15% of all the UK's green house gas emissions, with the average house producing approximately six tonnes of carbon dioxide a year."

"As a nation it is up to us to start taking responsibility for our actions and we must look for ways to help reduce our impact on the environment. This guide should help educate as to how everyone can start living in a more environmentally friendly way."

The Crest Nicholson Guide to Greener Living is available to download at http://www.crestnicholson.com/greenerliving/default.aspx

The Top Ten Hints for a Greener Home

  1. Re-visit some old-fashioned, tried and tested cleaning methods - a tablespoon of lemon juice in a bucket of warm water is perfect for cleaning windows
  2. Check that wooden furniture comes from a sustainable source. It should have a Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) stamp
  3. Use low energy light bulbs. Normal bulbs use 75% more power
  4. Protect your identity, but cut out the paper shredder as it shortens the fibres and makes the paper useless for recycling. (Great for composting however).
  5. Do not carry unnecessary weight in the car as this increases fuel consumption
  6. Turn off the hose pipe unless you want to drain water resources by 600 litres an hour
  7. Plan gardens with low maintenance and water conservation in mind. Use drought resistant plants that require less water and utilise objects for decorative effect such as rocks, bricks and gravel.
  8. Hang the washing out. Tumble drying creates 515,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in the country each year
  9. Use a 40 degrees wash cycle rather than 60 degrees and save a third in electricity. (RRR Says: try going down to 30 and save even more.)
  10. Shower instead of taking a bath as this can save over 300 litres of water a week.
