Five local environmental initiatives across the country have been recognised for their contribution to sustainable living, by being announced today in the shortlist for this year's Future Friendly Awards.
The Future Friendly Awards is a nationwide search for people who are making a real difference to their local community by championing sustainability and inspiring others to do the same. This year’s awards have seen hundreds of entries, from individuals to communities, to entrepreneurial new businesses – all demonstrating the inspiring work being done to help improve the world around us.
The five projects in the running are:
- Bollington Carbon Revolution in Cheshire has been commended for working with policy makers and helping influence nearly half of the local residents over the last two and a half years on sustainability issues, as well as planting tress and helping to form community gardens.
- The staff and students at George Stephenson High School have been recognised for the construction of a containerised bio-diesel reactor on the school grounds, which needs no electricity or water from the mains and only produces distilled water as a waste by-product.
- Ravenscliffe High Special School in Halifax, has taught students with learning difficulties help to preserve the environment. As part of the programme, students and teachers complete weekly recycling collections and clean up local gardens in the community.
- St Endellion Climate Friendly Parish in Cornwall has been commended for installing solar heating systems for local residents and their work with the University of Cornwall to calculate the village’s carbon footprint.
- Supported by the local council, the Green Zones Initiative has now spread across the borough of Brent in North London, as residents volunteer to help turn their street into a Green Zone.
The public can vote for their favourite project at www.futurefriendly.co.uk, where voting is open until 4th April. The overall winner will receive a bursary worth £20,000 to help them continue the good work they are doing.
