Future Friendly Awards 2008
Winners Announced

Six local environmental initiatives from across the UK have been announced as winners of the Future Friendly Awards 2008

The Future Friendly Awards are a national initiative aimed at recognising local ‘green heroes’ who have taken steps to save water, energy or waste, and who have also inspired their community to do the same. The judging panel included representatives from four of Britain’s top environmental organisations – Energy Saving Trust, Global Cool, Waste Watch and Waterwise – as well as other experts in sustainability.

Winners were presented with a cash bursary of £5,000 or £10,000 by Sir Trevor McDonald at the awards ceremony held in London. The winners of the Future Friendly Awards 2008 are:

Youth Creativity Award - Clive Birnie / Spires Academy Elephant Sculpture

  • An elephant sculpture created from recycled materials was designed and built to inspire students to look critically at packaging and its impact on the environment.

Adult Creativity Award – Joanna Pearce / nappyvalley.co.uk

  • An online marketplace for parents to recycle used prams, cots, highchairs etc between local families. The website’s postcode calculator unites buyers and sellers who live close to each other, encouraging recycling rather than sending items to the tip.

Youth Innovation Award  - Henry Monkcom / Water Wizard

  • 15 year old Henry developed a device designed to save the water that runs from the tap before it gets hot, by running it to a water butt or to a cistern for use elsewhere.

Adult Innovation Award - Paul Priestman / Water Watch

  • A small device that attaches to your tap to remind you how much water is being used. For every litre of water, the display shows a bottle filling up and a numerical counter shows the total litres used, letting consumers see how much they're using.

Local Champion Award - Doug McLaren / Tayside Recyclers

  • A long-term and large-scale project which encourages recycling by receiving, sorting and re-selling unwanted items.

Community Action Award  - Sustainable Youlgrave

  • A long-term project aimed at tackling and reducing the carbon footprint of the village of Youlgrave in Derbyshire
