Kids Go Green with Eden

Nationwide Schools Campaign To Encourage Bulb Planting

September 08, 2008

Schools across the UK are being given the chance to have their garden redesigned by the Eden Project, with up to £8,000 towards making it happen.

The prize is part of a Kids Go Green with Eden campaign launched by the Eden Project and The Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Centre.

The campaign aims to highlight the importance of getting children outside and learning about their natural environment while using the “plant now” message to encourage schools to regenerate and enhance their own surroundings.

During September, schools nationwide will be sent an educational pack including a ‘how to’ guide to planting, a bulb timeline, plus an array of posters, quizzes and tips.

Planting bulbs is an easy, cheap and effective way for children to brighten up playgrounds, car parks and pathways and as spring flowering bulbs can be planted from September to December the autumn term is the time for schools to get digging.

With up to £8,000 towards the implementation, the aim is to create a fantastic outside space at the school whether it is building a biosphere, or transforming an unloved playground into a wildflower garden.

The school will also win 1,000 bulbs to kick start the transformation and a visit from a member of the Eden Project’s educational team. To enter, children in years 1 – 6 will be invited to submit a poem about the wonder of bulbs such as daffodils or tulips and entries will be judged by Jo Elworthy, acclaimed children’s author and Director of Interpretation at Eden. Also among the judging panel will be Anna Marie Murphy, writer and Eden poet.
