Marine Week 2007Celebrate life on the sea-shore![]() The Wildlife Trusts’ Marine Week runs from 4-19 August. This celebration of the sea features events all around the UK, and the opportunity to sign a Petition Fish scale and pledge your support for a Marine Bill to protect our seas. In the UK we are never further than 70 miles from the sea, and with the holiday season in full swing, there’s no better way to get involved than by taking part in The Wildlife Trusts’ Marine Week. This annual celebration of our seas and marine life runs from 4-19 August and encompasses events taking place all around the UK, both on the coast and at venues inland. These provide fun-filled opportunities to learn about marine habitats and wildlife and to support The Wildlife Trusts’ campaign to save our seas. There’s a huge choice of events for adults and children, from rockpool rambles to learning what to do if you find a stranded dolphin. Many activities are perfect for family days out during the school holidays – you can try your hand at bird or seal watching, go on a seashore safari, try snorkelling or learn how to go crabbing the eco-friendly way. From hunting the tide-line for treasure to enjoying a beach barbeque, there is something for everyone. The UK’s 17,820 km (11,073 miles) of coastline is host to an amazing array of flora and fauna; in fact more than 40,000 species live in our seas – including intricate corals, whales & dolphins, giant (but harmless) basking sharks, seals, puffins and a myriad of fascinating fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Lisa Browning, The Wildlife Trusts’ marine development manager, adds: “Since Victorian times, the UK public have enjoyed the attraction of the seaside. However, until recently the seas resources had been largely taken for granted as a limitless source of food and minerals, as well as a vast receptacle for sewage and rubbish. “During Marine Week we want people to enjoy our seaside heritage but we also want to increase awareness of the issues facing marine nature and to encourage responsible stewardship of this precious environment and its unique wildlife. “The Wildlife Trusts have been a leading voice in the campaign to introduce a Marine Bill to provide protection for our seas and this is a fun way to get a serious message across. “Throughout the summer hundreds of Petition Fish will be taken to Wildlife Trust events around the country so that the public can sign the scales and pledge support to The Wildlife Trusts’ campaign for a Marine Bill to safeguard our seas and marine wildlife. So, wherever you are during Marine Week remember to sign a Petition Fish and help save our seas. For the full list of Marine Week events visit www.wildlifetrusts.org”.
