Local Communities Will Influence Climate Change Action

Energy Saving Week 22nd – 28th October 2007

When it comes to saving energy and tackling climate change, just who has got the power to encourage people to do their bit? Al Gore? Brown? Cameron? Research released today, ahead of Energy Saving Week, reveals that the answer might lie a little closer to home…

It’s members of our local communities such as the shopkeepers, members of the Women’s Institute and religious leaders that hold the most influence according to the climate change Influencer Index created by the Energy Saving Trust.

Their influence is clearly working as people across the country are finally switching on to fears about climate change with nearly a third of Brits shunning products from companies they feel are damaging the environment. 35% of respondents also claimed they now walked on a regular basis rather than use the car or other modes of transport.

The research categorised four key groups within the nation with varied attitudes to climate change. Community Changers, Armchair Advocates, Tea-time Solvers and Self-contained Singles are among the influencer types when it comes to protecting the planet. The findings also show that our future lies largely in women’s hands, with women making up the majority of the most influential type.

We’re now being urged to harness the influence within our local communities to help tackle climate change. To find out more about Energy Saving Week visit www.energysavingtrust.org.uk
