Woodland Trust 2006
Christmas Card Recycling Scheme

Recycle cards to help save woods and trees

The Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, has one simple message now that the festive season is over – recycle your Christmas cards and help save woods and trees.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Woodland Trust has teamed up with retailers WHSmith and Tesco to deliver its annual Christmas Card Recycling Scheme. Recycling bins will be in all WHSmith high street stores and all Tesco Extra and Superstores from Monday 2 January – Tuesday 31 January 2006.

The scheme, which is supported by Recycle Now, will aim to recycle 60 million cards. The 2005 scheme exceeded its 50 million target totalling 58 million cards.

To achieve its target, the Trust relies on members of the public to “spread the word”. Simple but effective methods of communication involve distributing campaign posters to local libraries, shops and waiting rooms. Posters can be requested by calling 01476 581112 or downloaded from the scheme’s website at www.woodland-trust.org.uk/. Word of mouth is also a very effective way of promoting the campaign to friends, family and colleagues.

Ioan Reed-Aspley of the Woodland Trust says: “Christmas is a time when a huge amount of consumer waste is generated. By simply recycling Christmas cards the public can address the problem and help save woods and trees. There are many wider environmental benefits too. Recycling just one Christmas card saves enough electricity to allow five people to watch the Queen’s Christmas day message.”

The 2006 scheme is backed by national recycling campaign, Recycle Now. Nottinghamshire County Council administers the support from local authorities. SCA Recycling and Severnside Recycling collect and recycle the cards.
